POUGHKEEPSIE- Writing, Drawing and Creating Comics with The Art Effect @ Pershing Studios

In this course, we will learn how to come up with visually distinctive and easily recognizable characters, and how to flesh out ideas into scenes and stories. We will explore visual storytelling techniques, including the use of establishing shots, medium shots, close ups, and two shots, and how to handle transitions (in time and/or location). You will also learn how to make sure your words and your pictures are working together for the most effective storytelling, and get to create and illustrate a page of comic book script.

Instructor: Alisa Kwitney (a former DC Comics editor)
Alisa Kwitney is a writer of comedic romance novels and graphic novels. She has a BA in English from Wesleyan University, where she received the Horgan Writing Prize for Fiction, and an MFA in Fiction from Columbia University, where she received a scholarship of merit. Kwitney was an editor for Vertigo Comics and DC Comics. Her master’s thesis, was published by Harper-Collins as her first novel, Till The Fat Lady Sings, in 1991. She is currently the editor for Liminal Comicsat Brain Mill Press.
The Art Effect empowers youth in the Hudson Valley through the arts and media. Our programming sequence supports the personal and professional development of youth and provides them with the tools and support necessary to explore the arts, gain meaningful experiences, and eventually excel in their chosen tracks.
