A portion of book sales will go to benefit JCY-WCP literacy programs in schools throughout Westchester as well as to underwrite a new program in an elementary school in Ossining. Literacy mentors will work with individual children once per week. We also support Summer Reading Buddies which happens in the Yonkers and Ossining public libraries. Hundreds of children show up each summer for this program.
The Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival, was recently voted “Best Bookworm Event” by Westchester Magazine. This year’s Book Festival poster was created by renowned designer, illustrator and award winning, acclaimed author Eric Velasquez. Mr. Velasquez was inspired by his love of reading and of collecting books when he created the image that captured the spirit of Arturo Schomburg, echoing the cover of his award-winning book Schomburg: The Man who Built A Library.” Copies of the poster will be available for sale at the festival. The art will also appear on mugs, bags and other merchandise available on festival day.
This year CCBF will feature more than 20 new authors and illustrators, including Tracey Baptiste, John Parra, Lori Wallmark, Michael Northrop, Veera Hiranandini, Torrey Maldonado, Michael Rex, Jennifer Rollo, Samantha Berger, MacKenzie Cadenhead and many CCBF regulars, including Rosemary Wells, Victoria Kann, Bruce Degen, Bernard Most, Gail Carson Levine, Sally Cook, Barbara Dee, and Peter Lerangis, among many others.
The Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival is a grassroots, all-volunteer effort, with community members working together so that children and teens can be inspired by their favorite authors. The Festival gives kids and families a chance to meet and interact with the creators of their favorite characters – to appreciate that there is a real person behind the art and the words on the page.
CCBF hosts events and programs throughout the year to benefit literacy partner JCY-Westchester Community Partners, which develops inter-generational programs to meet the literacy needs of children in Westchester communities such as Yonkers, Mount Vernon and Elmsford. CCBF also sends local volunteers to JCY’s Summer Reading Program at Yonkers Riverfront Library.
